Utah Cop Fired From Part Time Job For Threat

A Utah Police Officer Jeff Payne has been fired from his part time job as a paramedic over video footage and statements he made during an arrest of a nurse at University Hospital in Salt Lake City.  The footage of the arrest has made waves among activists and the nursing community because the nurse seems to be following hospital policy when she is handcuffed and arrested in an aggressive manor.

What’s interesting here is that the Detective Payne’s part time employer wasted no time in firing him for behavior they saw on film and deemed inappropriate.  He made statements, they heard them, they didn’t like them or approve so they fired him, rather simple.  On the other hand we have video and sound of this officer making an unlawful arrest with excessive force, and it requires an investigation and paid leave.

What is also interesting is the vocal support from the nursing community that find this behavior unjust and unacceptable.  If a police officer is knowingly on camera and still has no problem making statements that can get him fired from his non-police job, and making an illegal arrest with excessive force, and the person being arrested is a white law abiding nurse, I wonder what some officers could be capable in “other” situations?

Black people have been experiencing this exact situation for years and for many, it has eroded their ability to trust the police.  There are neighborhoods and citizens who see something like this everyday, and when they ask for help they are told to sit down and shut up.  When other people fight for them, those people are called liberal snowflakes or traitors and again are told to sit down and shut up.

I don’t know Alex Wubbles politics, but I have to wonder what she thinks of some of the principles Black Lives Matter stand for now? I have to wonder how she views a Colin Kaepernick kneeling now, I have to wonder how she feels about a Tamir Rice now? Remember she was following hospital policy and was still aggressively arrested.  Are people going to say “she should’ve complied”, or “thanks Obama”, or call her a snow flake?

I’ll leave you with a poem from German Pastor/Author Martin Niemoeller:

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

The police officer seen in a viral video aggressively arresting a Utah nurse has been fired from his part-time paramedic job.

Just something to think about.

Footage taken at the University Hospital in Salt Lake City on July 26 shows Detective Jeff Payne threatening Alex Wubbels with jail if she did not agree to take blood from an unconscious patient without consent.

In the video, Detective Payne says he would bring transient patients to the hospital in retaliation to Ms Wubbels and take “good patients” elsewhere.

On Tuesday, Gold Cross Ambulance President Mike Moffitt said he first heard the comments on the video and Detective Payne was fired as a result, NBC reported.

He has also been placed on paid leave by Salt Lake City police while a criminal investigation takes place.

As seen in the video, taken by Det Payne’s body camera, Ms Wubbels, the head nurse of the University of Utah Hospital’s burn unit, remains calm as she explains the policy after Payne insists on collecting the blood sample of an unconscious patient.

Ms Wubbels explains she is simply trying to her job, telling the detective: “three things that allow us to [give blood samples] are if you have an electronic warrant, patient consent or patient under arrest, and neither of those things… the patient can’t consent”.

“He told me repeatedly that he doesn’t have a warrant and the patient is not under arrest.”

The footage of the arrest shows Det Payne interrupting Ms Wubbels as she continues to explain the policy to him before placing her in handcuffs, which causes a brief scuffle between the two.

The video, made public Friday, sparked a wave of criticism over Payne’s confrontation with a nurse who appears to be following hospital protocol.

Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Biskupski and Police Chief Mike Brown apologised for the officer’s actions and promised investigations from Internal Affairs and the Civilian Review Board.
